NavGPS Pro for the Pocket PC

Consult our previous review of the standard version for additional details.

Review Updated: November 14,2002

One of the items from our previous wishlist has now been added! A new nearest airport feature displays a list of the 7 closest airports to you including distances. Simply tap on the airport you would like to go to and NavGPS will now track to this airport. If in Map mode airport information is display including frequencies and runway information. See screenshots below. The developers of NavGPS continue to make improvements to the application.

The Pro version offers improved usability. It is now easy to move from screen option to screen option by simply clicking one of the default PC hardware buttons. You no longer have to go to the options screen and make a selection change. This is a major improvement while using the product during flight. The less you have to use the pen the better.

One of the best improvements is the satellite status screen. In the original version of the software it was difficult to determine GPS reliability. To see a sample trip visit the Navgps site. Click here

Topographic information is now available as well. Downloads are free. Another nice feature is that you can change the default screen colors if you don't like them. While some technical skill is required to fugure out different colors editing the text file is easy.

We have used NavGPS on multiple long cross country flights including flights to Seattle, WA. ,Montrose, CO. and Tulsa, OK from Phoenix and it has worked great. I prefer the EFIS style screen but all work well. I have the Pharos GPS unit which works well. The only issue is the extremely poor cable connection with the bottom of the iPaq unit. A Compact Flash card with external antennae would be a better option. NavGPS has solved this problem with its new PDA holder. See our review.

Summary:

The developers of NavGPS continue to make great improvements of the product and I look forward to the next version.
